On September 8, 2023, at 23:11 DST, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Al Haouz Province. It was the strongest earthquake ever instrumentally recorded in the country and the deadliest since Agadir’s 1960 disaster. At least 2,960 people were killed, most in rural areas outside Marrakesh.

A week later, these photographs document life in the Marrakesh souks. Between piles of rubble and scaffolding, life presses on. The markets are open, the streets busy, and trade continues.
