SPICES AND SHOCKS

On September 8, 2023, at 23:11 DST, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Al Haouz Province. It was the strongest earthquake ever instrumentally recorded in the country and the deadliest since Agadir’s 1960 disaster. At least 2,960 people were killed, most in rural areas outside Marrakesh. The aftermath exposes the unequal burden of disaster, as rural communities and informal workers carry the heaviest losses while trying to rebuild in the shadow of the city’s commercial life.
